This week Associate in the Land Consultancy Team, Oliver Lukies, was invited to Westminster in his capacity as a Partner of his home farm business, to attend the NFU’s #StopTheFamilyFarmTax event. In addition to listening to speeches on the matter from the NFU president, he also joined a cohort of fellow local landowners to discuss the impact of the budget on his and other constituents’ businesses with their local MP Chris Vince.

Whilst also addressing the headline issues of changes to APR & BPR reliefs, Oliver went to great lengths to stress what he sees as the negative socio-economic impacts of increases in employers’ National Insurance contributions and other budget measures. With many local farming and rural businesses like his providing employment for many in their local areas, they are now worried about sustaining this employment and future growth as a result. It is his view that this budget is likely to reduce investment in rural businesses, halting productivity and growth as a result, thus reducing tax receipts for the government. Along with the groundswell of the farming community he calls upon them to reconsider.

Oliver plans to continue engagement with his MP on the matter with the hope of bringing about a much-needed softening of their position in recognition of the hardships suffered by farming businesses and the valuable contribution they make to food security and land and environmental stewardship.
